Grand Canyon

One of our favorite places to visit is the Grand Canyon.  We have gone during the fall season and the spring to get a different feel of which season we liked best.

When we started our adventures to the Grand Canyon, we tent camped.  Coming from California and all our friends having tents, we decided to try it.  Also, with two Boxer dogs, we wanted to make sure our dogs were comfortable also.  We stayed at the Mather Campground because they take reservations (~ 80% of campground can be reserved, the other 20% is first come first serve).  The first thing we realized is that in October, it's COLD!  BUT, having the trails to the South Rim made for a great three hour walk around and back to the campground.

Something else we realized is when you bring dogs, they are more comfortable when you sleep at the same level as them.  Our second trip we swapped our cots for our air mattresses and both dogs were happy and slept throughout the night.

Our last time we went to the Grand Canyon, we had our Toy Hauler which was such a nice experience.  Because the Mather Campground only allows generators to run for a few hours in the morning and at night, we made sure we brought extra blankets for the evening.  We used the generator to make my coffee and that was it.  The rest of the time was exploring, being able to see wildlife up close (the dogs thought the elk were huge dogs).

I never really camped growing up.  My husband took me camping for the first time when we were dating and he had me sleeping on a foam mattress on the ground.  That was not fun but over the years, I have enjoyed every camping trip to the mountains, the beach, the desert or a national park and we continue to enjoy nature with our pups.

For those with trailers/toy haulers (at least 23 feet long), we drove through all the loops to find the best ones to maneuver into the spaces.  Here are our choices: (I'll post tomorrow)
